What’s this about the Plum River?
Due to Illinois stream access laws, very few small rivers are open to the public. The lower Plum River is unique to have public status for a large distance, nearly ten miles from the river mouth, and about 8.5 upstream to Savanna’s Old Mill Park. A natural resource for the community is sitting dormant due to neglect, choked with numerous log-jams.
An open Plum River Water Trail benefits fishing, sporting, and tourism. With an open and marked “water trail”, a local treasure will be opened and used again, benefiting local residents as well as Savanna’s tourism economy.
The best way to do that is for the Savanna Park District to brand the project as the “Plum River Water Trail”, allow canoe, kayak, and tube launching from its parks, and be the public manager (along with volunteer help from a new local canoe/river club) for this resource.
Let’s open the Plum River!
